"Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water." (Mt. 14:28)
This is the 19th Sunday of Ordinary Time. Peter walks on water. The apostles were terrified to see Jesus approaching them. Peter is the spokesman for the apostles and his faith and love for the Lord make him leave the boat. At the command of Jesus, Peter was doing what was humanly impossible.
When Peter kept his gaze fixed on Jesus he overcame the obstacles. When he took his eyes off the Lord toward himself, he sank. The same thing happens to us. There are many storms in the world and in our personal lives. With Christ we can do all things. We need to lean on Christ in all our endeavors. With Christ, our weakness is turned into strength. Trusting only in ourselves we are destined to fail. It is a lifelong lesson for us. When we rely on ourselves and shout out to Christ to save us, at that same moment His hand in already there.
Questions for Reflection:
- Do I count on Christ's help in all that I do?
- When making plans and decisions am I aware of His powerful assistance?
- Do I quickly turn to Christ when I've taken my gaze off Him?
