Weekly Reflection - 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time 2023

"Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where have the weeds come from?" (Mt. 13:27)

This is the Sixteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time.  Christ gives us the parable of the weeds and the wheat.  Our natural inclination is to pull weeds up as soon as we notice them.  The parable gives us a divine perspective which is for some reason they are to remain.  God wills or allows everything to happen in the world and our personal lives.  He doesn't desire evil but allows it in order to bring about a greater good.

It is not easy to form a supernatural outlook of things.  However if we look at our lives, difficulties have often been the opportunities God has given us to grow in virtue.  We become stronger after passing through trials.  Scripture assures us that "All things happen for the good of those who love God" (Rm. 8:28).  God has never abandoned us, it is rather that we lack trust and let go of his loving hand.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Can I look back on my life and see God's hand in difficult moments?
  • Does that truth that he has been there give me the hope I need to face my present challenges?
  • Am I able to recognize the silver lining in what seemed to be only darkness at that time?
