Weekly Reflection - 26th Sunday of Ordinary Time (2023)

"Do nothing out of selfishness or out of vainglory; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves." (Phil. 2:3)

This is the Twenty Sixth Sunday of Ordinary Time.  St. Paul exhorts us to practice humility.  St. Teresa of Avila reminds us that humility is the truth.  It is the truth in our relationship with God, with others and ourselves.  The reality of our Christian life is that we are creatures of God, sons or daughters of God and sinners.  Many times we forget this in our relationship with others.

The natural tendency is to think ourselves superior to others.  We are overly sensitive to comments that may hurt our ego.  In reality, all the good that is in us is from God, and all the bad is from ourselves.  Because of our sins we have merited hell but Christ took our place on the cross and paid our debt.  To consider others as superior to ourselves makes our ego cringe.  The true Christian considers the bad use we have made of grace and that if others had received a tenth of the graces I have, they would be saints.

Questions for Reflection:

  • How do I practice the virtue of humility in my relationship with others?
  • Do I consider myself superior?
  • Am I able to recognize each person's God given gifts?
