"A man going on a journey called in his servants and entrusted his possessions to them. To one he gave five talents; to another, two; to a third, one- to each according to his ability. Then he went away." (Mt. 25:15)
This is the 33rd Sunday of Ordinary Time. Christ gives us the parable of the talents. The 25th chapter of Matthew deals with our final examination. There's nothing like preparing for an exam. It's not uncommon to pull "an all nighter" just to have more confidence the next day. Our final exam will be based on love. It will be summarized as the question of whether we have lived for others or for ourselves.
Pope Francis gives us some wise words we can reflect upon: "Rivers do not drink their own water; trees do not eat their own fruit; the sun does not shine on itself and flowers do not spread their fragrance for themselves. Living for others is a rule of nature. We are all born to help each other. No matter how difficult it is...Life is good when you are happy; but much better when others are happy because of you."
Questions for Reflection:
- Do I consider the gifts and talents I have received as a good for myself but intended as a gift for others?
- Am I annoyed when others infringe on my "free time?"
- Do I recognize that I am always happy when I strive to make others happy?
