"Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord." (Jer. 17:7)
This is the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Jeremiah received a difficult mission from God. Humanly speaking it was repugnant to have to be the bearer of bad news. At the same time because he was firmly planted in God like a tree near running water, he did not give up. This year we have an opportunity to go deep in our lives to renew the reasons for our hope.
Jeremiah told God that he was too young to do what was being asked of him. Last week we heard Isaiah's excuse of having unclean lips. The starting point in our spiritual lives is to recognize that the task being asked is beyond us. If we do not rely on God, eventually the weight of life's burdens crushes us. We must turn to God in prayer and daily entrust everything to him. The Council of Trent in the document on Justifications says the following (paraphrasing): We are to do what we can. What we cannot, we must ask for grace, God who is faithful will give the grace to face whatever comes our way.
Questions for Reflection:
- Do I turn habitually to Christ and share my burdens with him?
- Do the words of St. Paul "I can do all things in him who strengthens me" give me hope?
- Does my prayer life support my daily activity?
