Weekly Reflection - Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe (2023)

"For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet." (1 Cor. 15:25)

This is the last Sunday of the liturgical year, the Solemnity of Christ the King.  God is not who we think he is but rather who he says he is.  Christ when asked by Pontius Pilate if he was a king, he answered, "I am."  After he added that his kingdom was not of this world.  We see the bumper sticker often NOTW to remind us that as Christ is not of this world, we are also not of this world.

We are called to be in the world as salt and light but not of the world.  The life of the Christian is to give witness to spiritual realities beyond what we can perceive through our senses.  St. Thomas Aquinas said the spiritual is even more real than the natural in the metaphysical sense.  We must submit our entire lives to the gentle yoke of Christ the King.  What appears as subjecting our freedom actually enables us to be truly free.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Have I submitted to the Lordship of Christ the King?
  • Is there anyone or anything I place before him?
  • Do I give witness to his kingship even when it is difficult or costs me?
