Weekly Reflection - Pentecost Sunday (2024)

"Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the sky, and so make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered all over the earth." (Gen. 11:4)

This Sunday is the Solemnity of Pentecost.  The Holy Spirit is the soul of Christ's Mystical Body.  In the Veni Sancte Spiritus we pray that He water what is dry and make supple what is hardened. He comes to heals wounds and divisions.

In Babel the people had a common language but didn't understand each other.  In Pentecost the people spoke a diversity of languages but understood each other clearly.  The Holy Spirit helps me to see my neighbor as another self regardless of the differences we may share.  I consider the gift given to another as a gift given to me because we are of the same body.  The Holy Spirit wants to break down silos and ease the polarization we are experiencing today.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Am I a peacemaker in the world?
  • Am I able to understand that there is more that unites us than what divides?
  • Do I pray to the Holy Spirit before saying a word that may cause more harm than good?
