Father Michael's Weekly Reflection

Weekly Reflection - 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time (2024)

When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." (Jn. 2:4)

This is the Second Sunday of Ordinary Time. Mary is present at the wedding of Cana.  All the guests are interested in enjoying themselves while Mary observes.  She notices they have no wine.  In an act of charity, she saves them from embarrassment and disappointment.

Mary is our spiritual mother. She recognizes our needs much better than we do.  Humanity lacks wine.  We lack the wine of charity, compassion and mercy.  We especially lack the virtue of hope. This year we have the opportunity to grow in this theological virtue and offer reasons of hope to those around us.  A child does not fear while its mother is near.  Let us never let go of Mary's hand as we begin this new year. "Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the child of her womb? Even should she forget, I will never forget you." (Isaiah 49:15)

Questions for Reflection:

  • Do I pray every day as if everything depends on God and work as if everything depends on me?
  • Am I resolved not to forget about God in the midst of my difficulties?
  • If I have the misfortune to lose my peace, do I know how to recuperate it?
