Weekly Reflection - 2nd Sunday of Advent (2023)

"John the Baptist appeared in the desert proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sin." (Mk. 1:4)

This is the Second Sunday of Advent.  John the Baptist appears on the forefront proclaiming a baptism of repentance.  Christ said there was no man greater born of woman than him.  He is the last of the prophets whose mission was to point out Christ when he came.

Isaiah speaks of bringing the hills and valleys low.  This was done to remove the obstacles for a king in preparation for his arrival.  Spiritually, this is our work this Advent. We are to remove in our lives what hinders Christ's coming.  Humility is the self emptying virtue we need to practice.  He must increase and I must decrease.  This is a program of life for us.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Am I able to detect pride in my life?
  • Do I recognize that we each have blind spots?
  • What special acts of self denial am I practicing during Advent?
