Weekly Reflection - 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time

"My grace is sufficient for you." (2 Cor. 12:9)

The second reading this Sunday gives us a glimpse into St. Paul's struggle.  Jesus tells us that "we should be perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect." (Mt. 5:48)  Despite our constant effort, we don't "do the good we want but the bad that we don't want." (Rm 7:15)  Each of us has something that we are struggling with and can't seem to overcome.

St. Paul spoke of a thorn in his side.  One of the greatest saints in the church felt that he was the least of the apostles.  After asking God to take away the obstacle which impeded his growth, the Lord said he wouldn't, but that his grace was sufficient for him.  If it wasn't for the thorn in our side as well, we would quickly become proud and feel without need of Christ's grace to sustain us.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Do I accept my weakness?
  • Without making a pact with it, do I serenely keep fighting to overcome it?
  • Have I learned to lean on Christ so I can repeat with St. Paul "when I am weak is when I am strong"?  (2 Cor. 12:10)
  • Does the acceptance of my own limitations help me be compassionate toward those of others?
