"Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way." (Lk. 10:4)
This is the Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Christ sends out his disciples with specific instructions. As long as they followed the Lord's instructions they were assured of divine success. The most important thing in our lives is to know what the Lord wants. By obeying God's will we can trust in divine assistance.
The disciples were to leave all excess baggage behind. The same goes for us. St. Ignatius speaks of attachments as anything that is not God that keeps us from him. Some of our attachments are obvious. Others we discover by the light of the Holy Spirit when we are honest with ourselves. St. John of the Cross says that a bird can be tied down by a chain or a string. Either way it is not free. We must strive to live spiritual poverty in our lives to give credible witness in a consumerist world.
Questions for Reflection:
- Am I aware of my attachments?
- Am I firmly resolved with the help of God's grace to free myself of them?
- Do I trust daily in God's providence to supply for my true needs?
