Weekly Reflection - 1st Sunday of Advent (2022)

"Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come." (Mt. 24:42)

This is the First Sunday of Advent and the beginning of a new liturgical year.  We already see Christmas trees and lights going up.  Advent is an important time of preparation and should be lived accordingly.  Our human tendency is to live sacred time in a routine manner.  Because we've lived it before, we know what's going to happen.

This is precisely the message of this Sunday.  We have to remain alert and vigilant.  Christ came, comes to me by his grace today and will come again. When we travel at night and see an approaching town, we know we are close but are uncertain when we will arrive.  We might be closer than we think to our definitive encounter with the Lord.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Am I preparing for Christ's coming?
  • Do I put off for tomorrow the conversion of heart he asks of me today?
  • Am I prepared to take full advantage of this Advent that the Church offers me?
