Weekly Reflection - 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time (2023)

"And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it." (Mt. 16:18)

This is the 21st Sunday of Ordinary Time.  Christ asks the apostles who they think He is.  This is the fundamental question of our Christian lives.  Our answer determines everything else.  Christ is either who He says He is or is the greatest lunatic of all times.  The apostles died giving witness to their response that Christ is the Son of the Living God.

Among the apostles, Peter is the spokesperson.  He is the head of the twelve; the rock on which Christ would build His Church.  The Pope is the Vicar of Christ on earth.  He is the sign of unity of the entire Church.  The Catholic Church has experienced over two thousand years of unbroken apostolic succession.  Societies have come and gone but the Church remains despite the sinfulness of her members. If we remain in the boat of Peter, we will arrive safely to the shore of eternal life.

Questions Reflection:

  • Do I sincerely appreciate the gift of the Catholic faith?
  • Do I strive to find out the answers to any objections I may have?
  • Who is Christ in my life?
