They were exceedingly astonished and they said, "He has done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak." (Mk. 7:37)
This is the 23rd Sunday of Ordinary Time. Jesus cures the deaf man with a speech impediment. There is a spiritual level to the physical healings Our Lord performs. We seem to have difficulty hearing and speaking today. There are obstacles to listening to God and to each other. At the same time we listen to many voices that don't help us.
The speech impediment we experience comes from fear which stems from pride and human respect. The saints invite us to live in the world as if it's just us and God. In order to listen to God we must quiet other voices. Humility enables us to listen to other's points of view, honestly seeking truth in what they say. As we come to know our faith better we feel compelled to share the Good News which has brought meaning to our lives.
Questions for Reflection:
- Do I listen to God?
- What voice or voices do I listen to more than His?
- Am I open to the different opinions of others listening with humility and charity?
- Do I share my faith with others out of love?
