"If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all." (Mk. 9:35)
This is the 25th Sunday of Ordinary Time. Christ has been on a journey with his Apostles to Jerusalem. He walked ahead of them leading by example. Besides this, he explained all that he would have to suffer and be raised on the third day.
The apostles didn't grasp the message. They were too concerned discussing who was the greatest among them. We identify with this seeking of honors in all states of life. The most important thing is to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. Each of us must give glory to God simply by being exactly who we are created to be. "The glory of God is man fully alive." (St. Irenaeus). Each of us have the same opportunity to be saints. We shouldn't waste a moment comparing ourselves with others. Our true worth is who we are in God's eyes and that's it.
Questions for Reflection:
- Do I seek honors in secret?
- Am I upset when others are chosen before me?
- Do I add the Litany of Humility to my daily prayers?
