Weekly Reflection - 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time (2022)

"They can no longer die, for they are like angels; and they are the children of God because they are the ones who will rise." (Lk. 20:36)

Today is the Thirty Second Sunday of Ordinary Time.  We started this month by celebrating the Solemnity of All Saints followed by All Souls Day.  It forces us to reflect upon eternal life and how much that meditation influences my day to day living.

The saints are often depicted with a skull at their feet.  This symbolizes how they practiced "memento mori", remembering the moment of death in order to make sound decisions today.  Christ promises us eternal life.  Last week St. Paul spoke about the need to finish the race of our lives being faithful to Christ until death.  We often hear the consoling words "this too shall pass".  God has shown us his fidelity time and again and we should never doubt that will change.  We must keep our gaze fixed upwards and not be led by the same anxieties of those who don't share the same hope. Heaven is our eternal homeland and we are merely pilgrims here passing through.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Does my hope in eternal life help me overcome my fear of death?
  • Do I realize that sin is the only truly bad thing that can happen to us?
  • Have I made sure that my wishes are known to my family members regarding the end of my life?
