Weekly Reflection - 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time (2024)

"The jar of flour shall not go empty, nor the jug of oil run dry, until the day when the LORD sends rain upon the earth." (1 Kings 17:14)

This is the 32nd Sunday of Ordinary Time.  In the first reading as well as the gospel we contemplate a widow in need.  It is easy to say that we trust God in prosperity but when we suffer we often waver.  When we speak of poverty of spirit, we are talking about complete dependence on God.  God is a faithful father who always seeks our best.  However, this is always in reference to our spiritual needs, not necessarily our material wants. Father knows best.

Both widows gave from their livelihood, all they had to live on.  We often say that God cannot be outdone in generosity. If we look at our lived experience, we can say that this is always the case.  There is always a silver lining in the struggles we go through.  Many times we feel as if everything is going to fall apart but God sustains us. The moment that God stops thinking about us, we cease to exist.  Jesus reminds us of the sparrows of the sky, lilies of the field and even the hairs of our head are counted. How much more does God take care of us?
