Weekly Reflection - 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

"Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away." (Mk 13:31)

This 33rd Sunday of Ordinary Time, the first reading and gospel warn us of the end times.  The words and imagery have fascinated humankind from the time they were pronounced.  As the liturgical year ends, the Church invites us to prepare ourselves for this reality.  Many attempts have been made over the years to predict the time when it will happen and the worldwide pandemic has heightened this curiosity.

We must focus our attention on what we do know; that Jesus will come whether at the end of time or when we meet him when we pass from this life.  Jesus invites us to look at the sign of the times and make sure our lives are grounded in love.  As we continue our pilgrimage toward heaven let us not become distracted or drowsy because soon we will see the King.

Questions for Reflection:

  • How often do I think about heaven?
  • Am I willing to make the necessary changes in my life so to increase my confidence and hope?
  • Do I pay more attention to the words of the gospel or the world?
