"Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men." (Mt. 4:19)
This is the 3rd Sunday of Ordinary Time. Christ calls the first Apostles to follow him. Peter, Andrew, James and John were doing their daily occupation. Christ walked along the shore of their lives and called them but kept walking. It's not the same whether we respond when Jesus calls or not. They were asked to leave everything known to them and begin an adventure in faith with him.
Jesus doesn't wait for us to calculate our decision. He is God and merits a generous response. The rich young man in the Gospel gave Jesus a negative response and went away sad. He had many possessions. To be a disciple of Jesus is a radical decision to leave everything, even ourselves. For those who risk everything to follow him he rewards with one hundred fold in this life and eternal life in the next with persecutions.
Questions for Reflection:
- Do I calculate in my following Jesus?
- How do I respond to his calls each day?
- What hinders me from following him more closely?
