Weekly Reflection - 4th Sunday of Advent (2023)

"Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word." (Lk. 1:38)

This is the 4th Sunday of Advent.  Mary is the protagonist in the Liturgy today.  She is the most perfect creature who ever existed.  All her gifts were given to her in order to fulfill the divine mission.  She conceived Jesus in her heart before her womb. (St. Augustine)

She embodies humankind's perfect response to God.  She only questioned the Angel Gabriel in order to know how best to please God.  This was different from Zechariah's questioning of God's ability to produce the miracle.  Nothing is impossible for God.  We can have many if's and but's concerning God's plan for our lives but if we abandon ourselves into His loving hands, He will do the rest.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Do I realize that God already has a plan for me for all eternity?
  • When obedience to God's plan is difficult, do I lean on the power of His grace?
  • Does Mary's Fiat inspire me to say yes to God in my life?
