Weekly Reflection - The Ascension of the Lord

"This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven." (Acts 1:11)

This Sunday is the Solemnity of the Ascension.  Jesus reminds the apostles that it's better for them if he departs.  He goes to prepare a place for us so that where he is we also might be.  The head of the body has gone before where the body hopes to follow.  We are citizens of heaven.  We live in the world but are not of the world.

During the Easter season we have been encouraged to look upwards and not to the things of the earth.  The recent shooting in Uvalde one week after the atrocity in Buffalo has left us numb. We are in desperate need of God's love.  The world is dying for lack of Christ.  He is our hope.  We must continue to root ourselves in faith, hope and love and be doers of the Word and not hearers only.  Each of us has the responsibility to be missionary disciples and irradiate Christ's love to the world.

Questions for Reflection:

  • What do I most fear?
  • Does his promise of eternal life allow me to go through the darkest of times with hope?
  • Do I find in Christ all that I need?
  • Does his love fill the void in my heart or do I seek other things?
