Weekly Reflection - 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

"Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life."  (Jn 6:68)

This 21st Sunday of Ordinary Time is a continuation of St. John's account of the Eucharist.  The Lord's words are humanly hard to accept.  How was it possible to eat his flesh and drink his blood?  Yet he was not speaking symbolically.  Jesus lost many disciples that day.  His words are hard to accept but at the same time give eternal life.

The Church's teaching on certain issues are also hard to accept.  We are called to preach the truth in charity.  If we truly love someone, we cannot remain silent when they are hurting themselves.  Jesus did not change his message even though it broke his heart to see his disciples walk away.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Do I approach the teachings of the Church in faith first and then seek understanding?
  • Am I capable of entering into a dialogue with those having difficulties in doctrinal or moral issues?
  • Do I understand that being compassionate is not contradictory to speaking out when necessary?
