Weekly Reflection - 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time (2022)

"Rather, when you are invited, go and take the lowest place." (Lk. 14:10)

This is the Twenty Second Sunday of Ordinary Time.  Christ gives us a lesson in humility.  We all have the natural tendency to desire honours.  If it wasn't for Christ, we wouldn't understand the need for humility.  Cardinal Merry Del Val wrote a "Litany of Humility" where we are invited to ask for everything that goes against our pride.  Pride prevents us from recognizing our defects and makes us see qualities we don't possess.

The moment we say we are humble it is a sign of pride.  Humility is a costly virtue to acquire and a lifelong task.  The foundation is the realization that we are creatures and God is our Creator.  All that we are and have comes from Him. The good comes from Him and the bad comes from us.  Humility is the serene acceptance of ourselves with all our qualities and defects.  It enables us to live in the truth.  We must never forget that our true value is what we are in God's eyes and nothing else.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Am I able to detect pride in my life?
  • In what way am I working on the virtue of humility?
  • Am I excessively bothered when I am not noticed or taken into consideration?
