Weekly Reflection - 2nd Sunday of Ordinary Time

When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." (Jn 2:3)

This weekend we celebrate the 2nd Sunday of Ordinary Time.  The wedding of Cana marks another epiphany of Jesus revealing his divinity to the world.  As the wise men found Jesus "with Mary his mother" we see the mother of God again present.  While everyone was trying just to have a good time, Mary was attentive to the embarrassment of the new spouses running short of wine.

Mary's role in our lives is not secondary but necessary in God's plan for our lives.  We are to invoke her powerful intercession.  The saints teach us that her prayers are "omnipotent before God."  As our spiritual mother she is able to see what our true needs are more than we are.  She tells Jesus on our behalf that we don't have the wine of charity, purity or generosity.

We are also to imitate Mary's charity.  In a world becoming more egoistic, she teaches us that we achieve happiness by making others happy.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Do I turn to Mary frequently as my true spiritual mother?
  • When I ask her to show herself my mother, can I hear her repeat to me to show myself her son or daughter?
  • Am I attentive to the needs of others or do I expect them to attend to mine?
