Weekly Reflection - 4th Sunday of Lent (2023)

"While I am in the world, I am the light of the world." (Jn. 9:5)

This is the Fourth Sunday of Lent.  Christ is the light of the world.  Gaudium et Spes no.22 says that Christ came to reveal man to himself.  Without him we grope around in darkness regarding the meaning of our existence, our moral life and it's reference to eternity.  The light within us is our conscience.  Christ warns us that when we deform our conscience, "how dark is the darkness within."

We form our conscience according to objective truth we have received from divine revelation.  It is not enough to listen to it, we must also obey.  When we do not obey our conscience, it will no longer let us know when we have fallen into darkness.  Pontius Pilate said "What is truth?"  It's the same question that comes from the moral relativism surrounding us.

Question Reflection:

  • Is Christ my way, my truth and my life?
  • Do I listen to other voices around me more than his?
  • Do I obey my conscience even when it costs me?
