Father Michael's Weekly Reflection

Weekly Reflection - 16th Sunday of Ordinary Time (2025)

"There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her." (Lk. 10:42)

This is the Sixteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time. Jesus visits the house of Martha and Mary. Jesus knows the heart of each person. Martha has the sincere desire to please him and attend to his needs. In the Church, this is considered the active life being busy in the work of the Lord.  The problem is when we forget the Lord of the work. The difference between social work and the charitable works of the Church is Christ.

St. Francis de Sales said that there is no excuse not to pray.  If we respond that we are twice as busy it simply means that we have twice the need for prayer. It is a question to make room for the Lord. If we take care of his things, he takes care of ours.  We are to seek first his kingdom and everything else will be given to us.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Do I make room for the Lord on a daily basis?
  • Does worry and anxiety invade my heart without casting my burden on him?
  • Do I try to resolve all my problems in my head instead of conversing with Christ?
