Weekly Reflection - 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

{When you have done all you have been commanded, say, "We are unprofitable servants. We have done what we were obliged to do."} (Lk. 17:10)

Today is the Twenty-seventh Sunday of Ordinary Time.  Everything we are and have comes from God.  We are His servants.  At the same time, Jesus calls us his friend.  Being a friend of Christ in no way diminishes the fact that he is God and we are not.  This substantial humility keeps us in right relationship with him.  If we lose the holy fear of God we forget his rights over us and our duty to serve him.

By loving God, we are actually truly loving ourselves.  By obeying God's plan for us, we are simply doing our duty.  In a country where we place rights above all, we can easily forget about duty.  Christ came to serve and not to be served.  His life of selfless service is a model for us in a world that undervalues works that apparently go unnoticed.

Questions for Reflection:

  • What motivates me to act?
  • Is it purely out of love for God or do I find other motives?
  • Is my pride hurt when I am not taken into account or recognized?  Is the fact that God knows, enough for me?
