"Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house." (Lk. 19:5)
This is the 31st Sunday of Ordinary Time. Christ encounters Zacchaeus on the road. Zacchaeus heard that Jesus was coming and did whatever it took to meet him. It appeared that Jesus just happened to pass that way but in reality actively sought him out. God is the "Hound of Heaven" who searches for us. The grace given to us to seek him out always comes from him. "It's not that we have loved God, but that he has loved us first." (1 Jn. 4:10)
Jesus is not easy. For those who seek him out tenaciously, he rewards by revealing himself to them. Each of us have received the freedom to order our lives as we please. Often we say that we have no time for prayer yet spend an excessive amount of time on social media. We will always be those who benefit by apparently "losing" time seeking God.
Questions for Reflection:
- Do I seek Jesus daily in prayer?
- Am I aware that our faith is simply a personal relationship with him that requires effort?
- Do I understand that those things of more value in life always demand more?
