"Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone!" (Deut. 6:4)
This is the 31st Sunday of Ordinary Time. At the beginning of November, we celebrate all saints and commemorate all souls. The readings this Sunday coincide with love as the greatest commandment. God is love. He has first loved us. God doesn't force us to love him. He wants to win our hearts by means of his gifts and respects our freedom.
The saints were flesh and bone like us. There is no saint without a past and no sinner without a future. St. Thomas Aquinas was once asked what was necessary to become a saint. He answered, will it. Half of our work is the decision we make that must be renewed daily. The other half is putting the means into practice to achieve it. May our daily prayer be, with your help Lord, I want to be a saint.
Questions for Reflection:
- Have I made the decision to be a saint?
- Is there a reason I think it is impossible?
- Do the words of scripture, "with God all things are possible" help?
- Do I have certain saints who I pray to and who encourage me by their example?
