Weekly Reflection - The Epiphany of the Lord (2023)

"Go and search diligently for the child." (Mt. 2:8)

This Sunday is the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord.  Jesus reveals himself to the gentiles.  The wise men being illumined by a bright star were inspired to set out and look for the child.  This illumination is God's grace at work in each of our lives.  For some, it might be the realization that all our human attempts at happiness fall short.   For others, it might be the impossibility to fill the God void in our heart for meaning and love.

The diligent search for God is necessary.  He is not easy and without sincere determination, will not reveal himself to us.  The wise men didn't calculate the cost or the obstacles but set out guided by faith.  The star that at the beginning was bright was at other moments hidden from their sight.  Our life of faith will enable us to keep going despite the darkness.  In the end, they were rewarded by finding Jesus with his mother Mary.  We always find Jesus together with his mother.

Questions for Reflection:

  • At the beginning of this new year, am I willing to do whatever it takes to find Jesus?
  • Do I schedule my prayer?
  • Do I realize that the things in life of greater value require more effort?
