Weekly Reflection - First Sunday of Lent (2025)

"Filled with the holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert." (Lk. 4:1)

This is the First Sunday of Lent. We received ashes on our foreheads signifying the beginning of our Lenten journey.  Christ is led by the Spirit to the desert.  He had no need to undergo such privations but did it for us.  After Christ was hungry and vulnerable the devil approached him.

The book of Genesis paints the psychology of temptation.  Eve began a dialogue with the tempter and Christ didn't.  Fr. Ronald Knox said that the tempter will offer us just the enticement he knows that fits us.  Prayer and vigilance is not an option for the Christian.  The moment we leave our house in the morning there are snares set up for us that we can only overcome united to Christ.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Am I decided to go all in this Lent?
  • Do I put myself in the near occasion of sin?
  • Which virtue am I working on this Lent?
